John Krakauer was born in 1954, in Corvallis, Oregon. He had a normal childhood, and grew up to graduate from Hampshire College in 1976. Krakauer always lived near mountains, because he loved to climb them. In May 1996, along with four other climbers, Krakauer climbed Mount Everest. They made it to the top, but when a storm hit, he was the only climber to survive. Out of this came his #1 New York Times bestseller book Into Thin Air.
